A routine funeral ceremony in Obuasi on Saturday, 29 November 2025, turned chaotic after a firearm was discharged, injuring a prominent traditional ruler, Nana Okofo Kwabena Bonsu, the Adanse Dompoasehene.

According to a briefing received by the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC), the chaos erupted when a 30-year-old man, identified as Nana Yaw Dankwa, reportedly fired a shot during the ceremony.

Police officers stationed at the event swiftly intervened, disarmed the individual, and placed him under arrest.
He is currently in custody assisting with investigations as security agencies piece together what triggered the shooting and whether it was accidental or deliberate.

The injured chief, Nana Okofo Kwabena Bonsu, was immediately rushed to a health facility where he received treatment.

Medical officials later confirmed that he had been discharged and was recuperating at home.

His condition has sparked relief among the Adanse traditional community, although questions remain about how a firearm was brought into the funeral despite an active nationwide directive restricting their use.

In a statement, the ARCC urged the public to remain calm while police continue their investigations.

Authorities also reiterated the need for community members to respect the firearm ban and cooperate with law enforcement, stressing that compliance is essential to safeguarding lives during communal events.
