Bawumia Mourns Accra Newtown Building Collapse Victims

The 2028 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed deep sorrow following the fatal building collapse at Accra Newtown, which has so far claimed three lives and left several others injured.

The tragic incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, March 29, 2026, when a multi-storey structure—reportedly an uncompleted school building being used as a makeshift church—collapsed during a worship session.

The sudden cave-in trapped congregants beneath rubble, triggering panic and a massive emergency response effort.

By Sunday night, authorities confirmed that three persons had lost their lives, while at least 20 others had been rescued from the debris.

Earlier in the day, initial rescue efforts by residents using bare hands and simple tools helped save some victims before personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service, Police, and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) took over the operation.

In a statement shared on his social media platforms, Dr. Bawumia conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and expressed hope for the recovery of the injured.

“I have received with sadness news of the tragic building collapse in Accra Newtown this afternoon. May the lives lost painfully rest in peace, and my deepest sympathy goes to the families. I pray that all trapped are brought out safely, and the injured recover swiftly. I also commend the rescue teams for their efforts to save lives,” he stated.

Emergency teams have continued to work through the night, combing through the wreckage in search of any remaining survivors, while security personnel maintain a perimeter around the site to ensure safety and facilitate ongoing operations.

Authorities have also appealed to the public to stay away from the area to avoid hindering rescue efforts.

The cause of the collapse remains unknown, but officials say a full-scale investigation will be launched to determine whether structural defects, unauthorised construction, or regulatory breaches contributed to the disaster.
