Member of Parliament for Atiwa East in the Eastern Region, Abena Osei-Asare, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of seven people following the collapse of a galamsey pit at Asamang Tamfoe in the constituency.
In a statement posted on Facebook on Monday, August 31, the MP described the incident as a “profound tragedy”, saying the loss of the seven lives had plunged their families and the wider community into deep sorrow.
She extended her condolences to the bereaved families, friends and residents affected by the disaster, praying for strength and comfort for them during the difficult period.
“I have received with profound sadness the news of the tragic collapse of a galamsey pit at Asamang Tamfoe, which has resulted in the loss of seven precious lives,” she stated.
Osei-Asare also acknowledged the efforts of emergency responders, community members and relevant authorities who were involved in the aftermath of the collapse.
While mourning the victims, the MP said the incident should serve as a wake-up call for renewed attention to safety and responsible mining practices.
She stressed that protecting human life must remain the foremost priority in mining communities.
“Beyond our grief, this tragedy calls for renewed attention to safety and responsible mining practices,” she said.
She further called for stronger measures to prevent similar incidents, describing the deaths as avoidable tragedies.
