Sammi Awuku Calls For NPP Unity, Party Begins 2028 Election Preparations In Germany

By Daniel Bampoe

The Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, has called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Germany to set aside internal disagreements, embrace humility and rally behind the party’s newly elected national executives as preparations intensify towards the 2028 general elections.

Awuku said unity, mutual respect and collective responsibility would be crucial to rebuilding the party’s structures and strengthening its political fortunes after its electoral setbacks.

He made the appeal during the NPP Germany Branch’s Thanksgiving Service and Unity Dinner, held from October 9 to 10, 2026, in Frankfurt and Hannover, where party members and invited guests gathered to reflect on the organisation’s activities and discuss its future.

The two-day programme began with an Islamic prayer session in Frankfurt on Friday, October 9, and concluded with a Christian worship service and unity dinner in Hannover on Saturday, October 10.

Addressing the gathering, Awuku stressed that the party’s external branches had an important role to play in its efforts to reorganise, mobilise support and pursue its objective of returning to power in 2028.

He urged members to put past disagreements behind them and work together under the leadership of the party’s newly elected national executives, arguing that internal divisions could undermine efforts to rebuild confidence and strengthen the NPP’s organisational base.

Awuku described his visit to Germany as that of a “John the Baptist”, explaining that it was intended to prepare the ground for an anticipated engagement between the Germany branch and former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on November 21, 2026.

Dr Bawumia is expected to visit Germany at the invitation of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, where he is expected to interact with party members in the diaspora. The proposed engagement is expected to provide an opportunity for the former Vice President to connect with party supporters abroad as the NPP continues its preparations for the next general elections.

Cautions leadership against arrogance

Beyond his call for unity, the Akuapem North MP placed particular emphasis on the need for humility and responsible leadership within the Germany branch.

Addressing the branch chairman, Dr Nana Benyin Enninful, Awuku said holding a leadership position should be regarded as a privilege that comes with responsibilities rather than an opportunity to disregard other members.

“A mandate is a privilege, not a licence to disregard others; trust must be earned through service,” he said.

He argued that leaders who earned the confidence and respect of their members strengthened their authority, while those who lost that trust risked weakening their leadership and creating divisions within the organisation.

Drawing on his experience as a party organiser, Awuku encouraged the branch executives to recognise the contributions of members at all levels and ensure that leadership decisions reflected the collective interests of the party.

He used the proverb, “It is the feathers that make the bird beautiful,” to illustrate the importance of individual contributions in building a strong and influential political organisation.

According to him, no single leader or group could build a successful party structure without the participation, commitment and cooperation of the wider membership.

His remarks placed the responsibility for rebuilding the branch on both its leadership and ordinary members, with an emphasis on service, discipline and mutual respect.

NPP’s 2028 challenge

Turning to national politics, Awuku acknowledged the challenges confronting the NPP’s 87 opposition Members of Parliament, but maintained that they would continue to advocate what they considered to be in Ghana’s best interest.

He also criticised the government’s performance in several sectors, including education, healthcare, sports and industry, raising questions about the implementation of the 24-hour economy policy.

The MP further expressed concern over reports that more than 50,000 Junior High School graduates had not secured placement, citing the issue as one of the matters requiring attention in the education sector.

The concerns formed part of his broader criticism of the government’s handling of key policy areas. However, the claims and assessments were presented as Mr Awuku’s political position at the gathering.

He urged Ghanaians living in the country and abroad to remain actively engaged in national affairs, encouraging members of the diaspora to discuss the NPP’s vision with their families and communities ahead of the 2028 elections.

Awuku said the party needed a disciplined and coordinated approach to political mobilisation, with its external branches playing a role in communicating its message and strengthening connections with supporters outside Ghana.

He also challenged the Germany branch to learn from past setbacks, rebuild its organisational strength and pursueits objectives with renewed commitment.

“Unity is not a slogan; it is the work members do together,” he said, adding that a branch became stronger when its leaders served with humility and its members participated actively in party activities.

Party Officials Rally Members

Other party officials and invited guests who attended the event also appealed to members to support the NPP and strengthen its structures.

Among those present were New Juaben South MP Michael O. Baafi, NPP National Council of Elders member Eileen Mary Posch-Oduro, Mündenheim Mayor Raymond Höptner, Germany Branch Chairman Dr Nana B. Enninful and Hannover Chapter Chairman Bright Otchere.
