Cable Thief Electrocuted At ECG Substation in Adoato, Kumasi

A tragic incident occurred at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) substation in Adoato, a suburb of Kumasi, on Saturday, April 19, 2025.

A young man in his late 30s lost his life after being electrocuted while attempting to steal a cable.

The incident happened in the early hours of the morning when the individual tried to steal an earth wire at the substation located near the Metro Mass Transit Station.

This incident is not an isolated case, as cable theft has become a recurring problem in the Ashanti Region.

ECG has reported an increase in vandalism of its transformers, cables, and protective equipment, which has resulted in outages affecting many customers.

Recent incidents have also been recorded at the Adoato Substation and the Adum Central Business District.

Consequences of Cable Theft

The ECG has expressed concern over the rising trend of cable theft, highlighting the impact on stable power supply in the region.

The company has cautioned the public about the dangers of engaging in such activities, which not only disrupt power supply but also pose a significant risk to life.

In light of the incident, ECG is appealing to the public to help protect its installations.

Police Involvement

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has been informed about the incident and is assisting in transporting the deceased to the mortuary.
