6 Charged In Massachusetts Over Marriage Scams Targeting US Immigration System

Six individuals in Massachusetts have been charged in connection with an alleged large-scale marriage fraud scheme in which sham marriages were reportedly arranged to help foreign nationals unlawfully obtain immigration status in the United States.

According to allegations outlined by the US Department of Justice, the operation was allegedly led by an individual who had been organising fraudulent marriages for more than a decade, generating millions of dollars through the scheme.

Prosecutors allege that the organisation arranged marriages between foreign nationals seeking immigration benefits and individuals who agreed to act as their spouses despite the relationships not being genuine.

The charges form part of an investigation into an alleged effort to exploit the US immigration system by creating the appearance of legitimate marital relationships to support applications for immigration benefits.

Authorities allege that the operation was not limited to isolated cases but involved an organised arrangement that had been running for years.

Investigators allege that the organisation’s leader had been coordinating sham marriages for more than 10 years, helping foreign nationals pursue immigration status through relationships that were allegedly established for fraudulent purposes.

The alleged scheme reportedly generated millions of dollars over the period it operated.Under US immigration law, marriage to a US citizen or lawful permanent resident may provide a pathway to certain immigration benefits, provided the marriage is genuine and meets the applicable legal requirements.

However, marriages entered into primarily to circumvent immigration laws can constitute fraud and may result in criminal prosecution.

Prosecutors allege that the defendants participated in arrangements designed to make the marriages appear legitimate, potentially misleading immigration authorities reviewing applications for legal status.

The allegations suggest that the operation relied on presenting evidence of marital relationships to support applications, even though the marriages were allegedly not genuine.

As part of the alleged scheme, the defendants reportedly took photographs of their wedding ceremonies and social activities with their purported spouses.

The photographs were allegedly intended to create the impression that the couples were in genuine marital relationships and to support applications for immigration status.
