BY Issah Olegor

Violence erupted once again in Sampa, the district capital of the Jaman North, on Wednesday afternoon, 10 September 2025, leaving at least one civilian dead and three police officers injured.

The latest flare-up is the most serious in recent past in a longstanding and bitter chieftaincy dispute that has periodically destabilized the border town.

Eyewitnesses reported that the clashes began in the town center, though the exact trigger remains unclear.

A woman, whose identity has not yet been confirmed, was reportedly shot dead during the confrontations.

The incident has reignited fears among residents of escalating tensions and prolonged instability in the area.

Three police officers, deployed to restore order, sustained injuries in the violence and are currently receiving treatment at various health facilities in the district.

According to sources, the officers were caught in the crossfire while attempting to disperse aggressive groups involved in the confrontation.

The clashes also left a trail of destruction.

Several houses, about ten shops, and parts of the local market were set ablaze, sending plumes of smoke across Sampa.

The residents fled in panic as the fire spread, adding to the chaos.

The Sampa chieftaincy dispute, which has spanned decades, has frequently erupted into violence.

Previous clashes have involved rival factions contesting the rightful occupant of the Sampa stool, often drawing security forces into tense standoffs and leaving communities in fear.

Meanwhile, efforts to reach the Jaman North District Chief Executive, George Adane, for comment were unsuccessful.

However, the Bono Regional Police Command has deployed additional security personnel to restore order and prevent further escalation.

Authorities have appealed for calm, warning that any acts of vigilantism or violence will be met with stern measures.
