Bryan Acheampong, Bawumia Lock Horns Over Zongo Voting Claims

BY Issah Olegor

The debate over the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) performance in Zongo communities during the 2024 general elections has resurfaced again, with tensions rising between former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and NPP flagbearer aspirant, Dr. Bryan Acheampong.

Acheampong, the sitting Member of Parliament for Abetifi, recently stated on Okay FM that the NPP had suffered heavy losses across nearly all Zongo communities in the country during the last elections.

According to him, the party lost in all of the 3,000 Zongo communities except for Efutu Zongo, which the party narrowly won by six votes.

He also highlighted significant defeats in areas like Asawae Zongo, pledging that he would revitalize the party’s presence in these communities if elected as the NPP flagbearer.

However, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a spokesperson for Dr. Bawumia, has challenged these claims, calling them misleading and factually incorrect.

In a detailed Facebook post, Dennis Aboagye emphasized that Dr. Bawumia actually secured victories in at least 111 Zongo polling stations, including those in Abetifi.

He stressed that election results are determined at polling stations, not entire communities, and that multiple polling stations can exist within one community or across several communities, making generalizations about “all Zongo communities” inaccurate.

Aboagye argued that many Zongo areas are grouped into polling stations that may not correspond precisely to a single community, and some stations labeled as “Zongo” may not even encompass Zongo residents.

He called on Bryan Acheampong to correct his statement, noting that a careful review of Zongo polling stations—which number fewer than 150 nationwide—confirms that Dr. Bawumia won in a significant number of these locations.

He also attached verifiable data from the Electoral Commission to support his claims.
