Deputy Finance Minister Designate Fumbles Over Women Banking

During the Parliamentary Vetting, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman and Deputy Minister for Finance designate, found himself in a tight spot when questioned about the Women Banking initiative as contained in the NDC manifesto.

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Ranking Member of the Panel and MP for Effutu, posed the question, referencing the campaign promise made by John Dramani Mahama.

“This woman banking, let me ask you, have you read it in your manifesto?” Afenyo-Markin asked.

The Asuogyaman MP, Thomas Ampem Nyarko responded, “Yes, Mr. Chairman, I read it.”

Afenyo-Markin pressed on, “What did it say?” Nyarko hesitated, saying, “I don’t remember.”

The exchange has raised concerns about the government’s commitment to the Women Banking initiative and the calibre of the appointee.
Mahama’s administration had promised to establish a Women’s Development Bank, providing low-interest loans and gender-sensitive services to women-owned businesses.

The initiative was seen as a crucial step towards promoting economic empowerment and reducing poverty among women.

Thomas Ampem Nyarko’s inability to recall details of the initiative raises concerns about the government’s priorities and commitment to supporting women’s empowerment.
Thomas Nyarko’s responses during the vetting session were expected to demonstrate a clear understanding of the government’s policies and initiatives.

Instead, his fumbling over Women Banking has sparked criticism and scepticism about the government’s ability to deliver on its promises.
