Ghana Rescues Nationals As Middle East Conflict Escalates

Ghana has taken swift measures to safeguard its citizens and diplomatic staff amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, following coordinated military strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced on March 2 that all Ghanaian embassy personnel in Iran have been successfully evacuated.

In a statement on social media, the minister said the evacuation exercise was completed, and all diplomats were safe and in high spirits. The closure of the embassy has been declared sine die, underscoring Ghana’s prioritization of the safety and welfare of its nationals.

“The safety, welfare, and protection of Ghanaians remains our utmost priority in these tempestuous times,” Ablakwa said, highlighting that heightened security concerns in Iran prompted the move.

The closure will temporarily affect consular services, but the government assures that all efforts are being made to ensure the well-being of Ghanaians abroad.

The decision comes amid a major escalation of regional tensions. On February 28, 2026, the US and Israel launched coordinated strikes targeting Iranian military infrastructure and leadership compounds.

Iran responded with missile and drone attacks across US-allied sites in the Gulf, leading to casualties and widespread airspace disruptions.

The instability has also affected Ghanaian citizens in the United Arab Emirates. Dozens of Ghanaians stranded in Dubai and Abu Dhabi have appealed for urgent evacuation after airport operations were disrupted by attacks, leading to fatalities and injuries.

Blogger Felix Adomako Mensah, known as ZionFelix, told local media that stranded citizens had limited information from authorities and were living in fear amid the escalating violence.

“We want to leave, so we are calling on the government to come to our aid and evacuate us to Ghana. We’re ever ready to leave. Inasmuch as we are safe, because they are trying to solve the issue, I’m still living in fear concerning how things are escalating within the region,” he said.
