GHS Swaps Regional Directors

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has announced a major reassignment of some Regional Health Directors in a move that raises questions.

Effective April 14, 2025, these changes are expected to strengthen the healthcare system and ensure the achievement of GHS objectives.

The reassignment affects several Regional Directors, with some taking on new roles at the GHS headquarters. Dr. Samuel Kwabena Boakye-Boateng, previously the Regional Director of Health Services (RDHS) for the Upper East Region, will now serve as the Director of Policy, Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation Division (PPMED) at GHS headquarters.

Dr. Kennedy T.C. Brightson, formerly the Medical Superintendent at Shai-Osudoku Municipal Hospital, will take on the role of Acting Director of Family Health at GHS headquarters.

Other notable reassignments include Dr. Abdulai Abukari, previously the RDHS for the Northern Region, who will now serve as the Director of Special Duties at GHS headquarters.

Dr. Alberta Adjebeng Biritwum-Nyarko, formerly the Director at GHS headquarters, PPMED, will now serve as the RDHS for the Central Region.

The GHS has emphasized that these changes are necessary to ensure that health services are delivered efficiently and effectively, and to meet the healthcare needs of the population.
Others argue that the changes are politically motivated.

The reassignment is expected to bring new perspectives and expertise to the various regions, ultimately improving healthcare outcomes for Ghanaians.

The Ghana Health Service is a Ghanaian government body established in 1996 as part of the Health Sector Reform of Ghana.

The Health Service is under the Ministry of Health and is responsible for implementing national policies for health delivery in Ghana.

The GHS has a mandate to provide and prudently manage comprehensive and accessible health services with special emphasis on primary health care at regional, district, and sub-district levels.

  1. Change is good but there is no position on GHs structure known as special duties.
    The moment you see special duties or operations then you know its politically created.
    No professional HR will create such position on a well meaningful structure of a reputable organisation. What will be the justification there off. Politicians know your limit
