Black Stars assistant coach Roger De Sa has confirmed that his appointment with the senior national team was solely for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, revealing that his contract will expire at the end of July.
The South African coach disclosed that his agreement with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) was tied exclusively to the World Cup campaign, raising further uncertainty over the future composition of the Black Stars’ technical team ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Speaking in an interview with South African publication KickOff, De Sa explained that his role was always intended to be short-term and would officially come to an end on July 31.
“I was only contracted until the end of July, so that’s it,” De Sa said.
“My contract was just for the World Cup, and it ends on the 31st of July,” he added.
De Sa joined the Black Stars’ technical bench shortly before the tournament after veteran Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz was appointed head coach following the departure of Otto Addo.
The experienced South African, a former goalkeeper and respected coach, became part of a technical team assembled specifically to guide Ghana through the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
During the tournament, the Black Stars made a promising start by defeating Panama 1-0 before producing a disciplined goalless draw against England.
Ghana, however, suffered a 2-1 defeat to Croatia in their final Group L match but still progressed to the Round of 32 as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams after collecting four points.
The Black Stars’ impressive run eventually ended in the knockout stage following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia, bringing the first World Cup appearance since 2022 to a close.
The revelation about De Sa’s contract comes amid uncertainty surrounding the future of the Black Stars’ technical setup after Carlos Queiroz also announced his departure following the team’s World Cup exit. Although Queiroz publicly indicated he was stepping down, the Ghana Football Association is yet to officially clarify the situation.
