The sudden death of New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary aspirant for the Asante Mampong Constituency, Beatrice Nana Yaa Owarewa Siaw, has sent shockwaves through the party and the constituency, with unanswered questions surrounding the circumstances of her death.
Nana Yaa, as she was popularly known, reportedly died on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, where she had been receiving medical attention.
She was a member of the NPP Council of Patrons and had emerged as an active figure in the party’s contest for the parliamentary ticket in Asante Mampong.
However, while news of her death has generated widespread mourning, claims circulating on social media that she may have been poisoned remain unconfirmed.
There has been no autopsy so far, and no official medical finding has established poisoning or any other definitive cause of death.
Information available indicates that Nana Yaa had gone to a chemist shop to purchase medication. After obtaining the medicine and leaving the premises, she was reportedly seen collapsing.
She was subsequently rushed to the Asafo Adjei Clinic for treatment before being referred to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
The circumstances surrounding the sudden deterioration of her condition are expected to become clearer once the appropriate medical and investigative procedures are completed.
Her death comes at a politically significant period for the Asante Mampong Constituency, where she had been actively campaigning to secure the NPP parliamentary nomination.
Nana Yaa had spent considerable time engaging party delegates and constituents and presenting herself as a grassroots-oriented aspirant capable of representing the constituency.
During one of her campaign engagements, she highlighted what she described as extensive development interventions she had undertaken in the constituency.
She claimed that the projects associated with her development efforts were worth more than GH¢40 billion, insisting that her record of supporting communities would strengthen her case before the delegates.
“As I mentioned earlier, I have done over 40 billion Ghana cedis’ worth of projects and I’m even doing projects that have never been done before,” she was quoted as saying.
She also repeatedly pointed to her relationship with ordinary constituents as one of the major reasons she believed delegates should support her parliamentary ambition.
According to her, humility, accessibility and constant engagement with people at the grassroots distinguished her from other aspirants seeking the NPP ticket.
“Because of these projects and because of my humility and talking to the grassroots makes me a key component, a key person to get the nod as a Member of Parliament,” she said.
Nana Yaa further described her political philosophy as one centred on listening to constituents and trusting them to make the right decision at the ballot box.
“I listen to the people, I love the people… the people believe in me and I also believe in the people to make the right decision to vote for me, to give me the nod. Without them, who am I?” she remarked.
Her political activities had made her increasingly visible within the NPP’s Asante Mampong parliamentary contest.
Her death therefore represents not only a personal loss to her family and associates but also a major development in the constituency’s political landscape.
News of her death has attracted an outpouring of reactions from Ghanaians and members of the NPP, with many social media users expressing shock at the suddenness of her passing.
Some recalled her recent public appearances and interviews, while others expressed sadness over the loss of a woman who had become increasingly prominent in the constituency’s political activities.
However, alongside the condolences, speculation about the cause of death has also spread rapidly online. The emergence of poisoning claims has heightened public interest in the circumstances surrounding her final hours.
Family members, political supporters and the wider public are therefore likely to await official medical findings before accepting any explanation for her death.
The absence of an autopsy at the time of the latest clarification means that it would be premature to attribute Nana Yaa’s death to poisoning, medication, illness or any other specific cause.
What is currently established is that she became critically ill after reportedly obtaining medication from a chemist shop, was taken first to the Asafo Adjei Clinic, referred to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and subsequently died there.
