The Ghana Police Service has deployed additional personnel, including two armoured vehicles, to New Winneba in the Central Region following a violent confrontation that has left at least three people dead and about 15 others injured.
According to a police situation report issued on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, the violence began at about 10:40 a.m. when an estimated 300 irate persons from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze reportedly stormed the New Winneba township.
The police said the group was armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks and allegedly attacked residents, shops and properties belonging to natives of the area.
The incident resulted in multiple injuries, with approximately 15 victims transported to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for medical attention. A police officer was also among those injured.
The Police Service confirmed that three people had died in connection with the violence, although it did not immediately provide details on the identities of the deceased or the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
In response to the escalating situation, personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and patrol teams from the Agona Swedru District have been deployed to restore calm and prevent further attacks.
The Inspector-General of Police has subsequently ordered additional reinforcement from the National Police Headquarters to strengthen security operations in the affected communities. The reinforcement includes two armoured vehicles.
The Police Service said the situation in New Winneba is currently under control, while security personnel remain deployed to maintain peace and protect lives and property.
