Ghanaian boxer Seth “Freezy Macbones” Gyimah has been crowned the new WBO Africa Light Heavyweight champion after defeating Nigeria’s Godday “Zodsolo” Appah by majority decision in Lagos.
The highly anticipated bout, dubbed “Chaos in the Ring,” was held at the Federal Palace Hotel and Casino in Lagos on October 1, 2026, as part of activities marking Nigeria’s Independence Day celebrations.
Macbones made a blistering start to the contest, immediately putting Appah under pressure with a series of powerful punches. His aggressive approach paid off in the opening round when he floored the Nigerian, sending an early warning about his intentions.
The 37-year-old Ghanaian maintained his dominance through the second and third rounds, landing the cleaner punches while dictating the pace of the fight. Appah was forced onto the back foot as Macbones relied on his movement, accuracy and punching power to maintain his advantage.
Appah stages comeback
The momentum shifted during the middle rounds as Appah mounted a spirited comeback. With the home crowd firmly behind him, the Nigerian increased the pressure and began finding his rhythm, producing his strongest spell of the fight as he attempted to overturn Macbones’ early advantage.
Macbones appeared to lose some of his early energy during this period, but the Ghanaian remained composed and gradually regained control as the contest entered its closing stages.
He finished strongly, maintaining an effective work rate and displaying discipline as he sought to secure the championship.
Macbones crowned
After 10 competitive rounds, the judges awarded Macbones a majority-decision victory, confirming him as the new WBO Africa Light Heavyweight champion.
The victory marks a significant milestone in the Ghanaian’s professional boxing career and strengthens his standing among the leading fighters in Africa’s light heavyweight division.
For Appah, the defeat was a disappointing end to his championship challenge, particularly after fighting before his home supporters in Lagos.
Macbones’ victory could now open the door to bigger opportunities on both the African and international boxing scene. The WBO Africa title provides the Ghanaian with an important continental platform as he continues his quest to establish himself among the elite fighters in the division.
The Independence Day showdown delivered an entertaining and competitive contest, but it was Macbones who ultimately emerged victorious and left Lagos with the continental crown.
The Ghanaian is expected to return to the ring in December, with a possible title defence against another Nigerian opponent reportedly being considered.
