About 200 bodies have been exhumed and relocated to another section of the Gurugu Cemetery in Tamale in the Northern Region to pave the way for the construction of the Tamale Third Ring Road.
The exercise, which involved traditional gravediggers known locally as Ka Siɣriba and some community members, was undertaken to clear the affected portion of the cemetery for the road project.
The remains were reportedly moved to the opposite end of the cemetery to make way for construction works along the route designated for the road.
According to a report, the exhumation and relocation became necessary because the proposed road passes through a section of the cemetery where the bodies had been buried.
Speaking to the media, the assembly member for the area and some of the gravediggers provided details of the exercise and explained the role they played in relocating the remains.
The gravediggers, who traditionally undertake burial-related activities within the community, worked alongside residents to move the remains to another part of the cemetery.
Although approximately 200 bodies were reported to have been relocated, details of the individual arrangements for the exhumation, the duration of the exercise and the procedures followed were not provided.
