A Federal Capital Territory- FCT High Court in Abuja, Nigeria, has sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of late Nigerian gospel singer Osinachi, to death by hanging for culpable homicide.
Justice Nwosu-Iheme delivered the judgment on Monday, April 28, 2025, after finding Nwachukwu guilty of the crime.
Background
Osinachi’s death on April 8, 2022, sparked widespread outrage and condemnation, with many calling for justice.
Nwachukwu was arraigned on June 3, 2022, on a 23-count charge, including culpable homicide punishable with death, criminal intimidation, cruelty to children, and spousal battery.
Trial And Evidence
During the trial, the prosecution presented 17 witnesses, including Osinachi’s two children, who testified against Nwachukwu.
The prosecution also tendered 25 documents as exhibits, while Nwachukwu testified in his defense and called four other witnesses.
Court’s Verdict
Justice Nwosu-Iheme held that the prosecution had proven the burden of proof placed on it by the law, and subsequently found Nwachukwu guilty.
In addition to the death sentence, Nwachukwu was sentenced to two years imprisonment each on several counts and fined N500,000 and N200,000 on others.
Reaction
The court’s verdict brings closure to the family and fans of Osinachi, who had been seeking justice for her untimely death.
