Justice Atuguba Takes Over As Chairman of UCC Governing Council

A former Supreme Court Judge, Justice William Atuguba, has been sworn in as the new Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Cape Coast.

The swearing-in ceremony was conducted by the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, who reaffirmed the government’s commitment to non-interference in the affairs of universities.

Commitment to Academic Freedom

Justice Atuguba emphasized the importance of academic freedom, stating that his leadership will fiercely protect the autonomy of public universities.

He welcomed the Minister’s assurance that the current government will not interfere with academic freedom, highlighting the need for universities to operate without undue influence.

Previous Administration Criticized

Haruna Iddrisu criticized the previous administration for attempting to undermine the autonomy of academic institutions.

He assured that the current government, under President Mahama, will prioritize academic freedom and non-interference in university affairs.

Council’s Mandate

Justice Atuguba’s appointment comes with a clear mandate to uphold academic freedom and ensure the University of Cape Coast’s governing council operates independently.

His experience as a former Supreme Court Judge is expected to bring stability and leadership to the council.

Minister’s Call for Harmony

In a related development, Haruna Iddrisu swore in the new Governing Council of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).

He expressed concern over tensions on campus and called for greater harmony to ensure a peaceful academic environment.

The Chairman of the new UPSA Council, Dr. Harry Agbanu, pledged to address misunderstandings between faculty and the Vice Chancellor.
