GJA President Dwumfour Seeks Reelection

By Daniel Bampoe

Incumbent President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has officially filed his nomination to seek reelection in the upcoming national executive elections scheduled for June 30, 2025.

His decision sets the stage for another round of leadership contests within Ghana’s foremost media association.

Dwumfour submitted his nomination today, looking visibly confident about his prospects.

Speaking after the process, he encouraged all journalists in good standing to participate in the democratic exercise, emphasizing the importance of a peaceful and transparent campaign.

“Let us go through the process in a peaceful, fair and orderly manner,” he urged both aspirants and voters.

This year’s elections come at a critical moment for the GJA, with positions such as President, Vice President, General Secretary, Organizing Secretary, Treasurer, Public Affairs Officer, and various regional officer roles up for grabs.

Nominations were opened on May 16, 2025, and only paid-up members are eligible to contest or vote.

Albert Dwumfour is seeking to extend his mandate after securing a notable victory in the 2022 GJA elections.

Then serving as the National Organising Secretary and Head of Corporate Affairs at the Tobinco Group, he emerged victorious in a keenly contested race for the presidency.

He polled 233 votes, defeating veteran journalist and communication consultant Gayheart Edem Mensah, who garnered 181 votes, and Dave Agbenu, then Editor of the Ghanaian Times and a former General Secretary of the GJA, who received 142 votes.

A total of 556 valid ballots were cast in that election, with three rejected.

The 2022 elections also saw Kofi Yeboah retaining his position as General Secretary by beating Adom FM’s Akwasi Agyemang with 348 votes to 208.

In the Organising Secretary race, GTV’s Dominic Hlordzi triumphed over Daily Graphic foreign editor and seasoned crime reporter Mary Mensah, securing 300 votes against her 255.

Notably, Mary Mensah had opted to switch roles from her long-held position as Public Affairs Officer, which she had occupied for two terms.

In that same electoral cycle, the Public Affairs Officer position featured two new contenders—GBC’s Rebecca Ekpe and GNA’s Caesar Abagali from Wa. Rebecca emerged victorious in the closely watched contest.

Meanwhile, incumbents Linda Asante Agyei (Vice President) and Audrey Dekalu (Treasurer), both from the Ghana News Agency, stood unopposed and are currently serving their second terms in office.

Despite an estimated 800 eligible members expected to vote in 2022, only 559 turned up on election day.

As the 2025 polls approach, observers within the media fraternity are keen to see if turnout improves and whether Dwumfour’s leadership record can secure him a second term.

The GJA elections are not only pivotal for determining leadership but are also a bellwether for the internal democratic health of Ghana’s journalistic community.
