Mahama Warns New Police Council Against Political Meddling In Promotions

BY Nadia Ntiamoah

President John Dramani Mahama has issued a strong caution to the newly reconstituted Police Council, urging its members to resist political interference in promotions, appointments, and disciplinary matters within the Ghana Police Service.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, the President emphasized that politicisation within the police service has deeply eroded morale, undermined professionalism, and weakened public trust in law enforcement.

The Council, chaired by Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, is tasked with providing strategic oversight for the police service.
President Mahama drew attention to persistent problems that have plagued the institution over the years — including arbitrary promotions, disregard for rank and seniority, and unfair postings — describing them as systemic failures that must be corrected immediately.

“For too long, issues of politicisation, arbitrary promotions, disregard for seniority, unfair postings, and breaches of professional conduct have cast shadows over the service’s credibility,” Mahama stated.

“Do not allow power to overshadow fairness. Let professionalism, not political pressure, guide your decisions.”

The President’s address comes amid a wider government campaign to overhaul public institutions under the RESET agenda, a strategic framework aimed at restoring standards, efficiency, and public confidence across state agencies.

Mahama stressed that the Police Council’s mandate is not ceremonial. Rather, it carries significant moral and legal responsibilities to guide the service in upholding discipline, integrity, and the rule of law.

He urged Council members to align their work with the RESET agenda and champion reforms that prioritize merit-based promotions, ethical leadership, and equitable treatment of personnel.

“You are now custodians of one of the most serious mandates in our Republic. This is not a task to be taken lightly,” he said.

“This swearing-in is more than a formality. It is a new beginning — a promise to build a police service that serves the people, not itself.”

The newly sworn-in Police Council comprises 11 members drawn from various arms of government and civil society.
