BY Daniel Bampoe

The Member of Parliament for Ayensuano Constituency in the Eastern Region, Ida Adjoa Asiedu, has reaffirmed her commitment to improving access to education in the constituency after supporting 100 fresh tertiary students under her educational assistance initiative, aimed at easing the financial burden on students and their families.

The programme, held at Sowartey on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, brought together traditional leaders, representatives of educational institutions, students, community members and other stakeholders to witness the presentation of financial support to beneficiaries pursuing tertiary education in various institutions across Ghana.

Addressing the gathering, Hon. Asiedu described support for education as a personal mission she had embraced since becoming the Member of Parliament for Ayensuano.

She explained that investing in the education of young people was essential to preparing them for future opportunities and equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute meaningfully to the development of their communities.

She encouraged the beneficiaries to take their education seriously, remain focused on their academic goals and make good use of the opportunity provided through the support scheme.

She also urged them to remain disciplined, determined and committed to their studies, stressing the importance of education in building a better future for themselves and their families.

The scheme is intended to provide relief to students who face financial challenges in pursuing higher education, particularly at a time when the cost of tertiary education places considerable pressure on parents, guardians and households.

A Growing Record Of Educational Interventions

Beyond the tertiary scholarship scheme, Ida Adjoa Asiedu has undertaken several educational interventions since assuming office as MP for Ayensuano, with support directed at students, schools, teachers and education administrators.

In February 2026, she provided scholarship assistance to 40 tertiary students, according to the record of interventions presented by her team. The support formed part of her broader efforts to help students access and sustain their tertiary education.

At the basic education level, the MP has supported the Ayensuano District Education Directorate in organising the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) over the past two years. Her annual contribution towards the exercise has been reported at no less than GH¢10,000, helping the district meet some of the logistical and operational demands associated with the examination.

She has also supported Coaltar Presbyterian Senior High Technical School and Anum Apapam Community Senior High School with their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) activities each year over the past two years.

Her interventions have extended to the provision of educational furniture and examination facilities. She facilitated the establishment of a BECE examination centre at Dokrochiwa and supported Kuano D/A Junior High School with monodesk furniture.

She also helped facilitate an examination centre at Kuano to improve access for candidates in the area.

In addition to student support and examination logistics, Ida Adjoa Asiedu has contributed to initiatives recognising the work of teachers and promoting extracurricular activities. She was the main sponsor of the maiden Ayensuano Teacher Excellence Awards, contributing GH¢50,000 towards the programme. The initiative recognised the importance of teachers in shaping students’ academic performance and the wider development of the education sector.

The MP also purchased trophies for the Ayensuano District Sports Festival, covering the various sporting disciplines contested during the event. She further facilitated a visit by students of Coaltar Senior High School to Parliament House, giving them an opportunity to observe parliamentary proceedings and learn about the legislative institution.

Her support has also extended to education administrators. Over the past two years, she has assisted the district director and accountant to attend their respective conferences, helping them participate in professional engagements relevant to their responsibilities.

New Support For Basic Schools

As part of activities surrounding the Sowartey programme, Hon. Asiedu earlier paid courtesy calls on traditional authorities at Kuano and Sowartey, engaging the chiefs and acknowledging their roles in community development.

She also donated cement towards work at Nfranor Basic School, another intervention directed at improving educational infrastructure within the constituency.

Further projects outlined as upcoming interventions include the donation of cement to Mfranor Presbyterian Kindergarten, the renovation of Teacher Mante D/A Junior High School and renovation works on the Budu Junior High School block.

These planned interventions, together with the scholarship programme and previous support for schools, form part of the MP’s stated efforts to address educational needs at different levels, from basic education through to tertiary studies.

Beneficiaries Express Appreciation

The beneficiaries expressed gratitude to Ida Adjoa Asiedu for the financial assistance, describing the support as timely in view of the financial demands associated with tertiary education.

Education Directorate Commends the Initiative

In a keynote address delivered on behalf of the Ayensuano District Director of Education, Rev. Alexander Narh Amanya, the Deputy Director of Supervision, Anthony Ofosu, welcomed the initiative and commended the MP for extending financial assistance to tertiary students.

Mr. Ofosu recalled that the first edition of the sponsorship package distribution was held at Asuboi in February 2026, when 50 tertiary students received support from Hon. Asiedu. He noted that the Sowartey programme was larger in scale and had a wider reach.

He observed that tertiary education comes with significant financial demands for parents and guardians, making assistance of this nature particularly important.

He said Ayensuano was privileged to benefit from such support and expressed appreciation to the MP for helping students pursue their academic ambitions.
