Former Ghanaian professional boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayittey Powers, has been remanded into police custody for one week by the Dansoman Circuit Court over an alleged threat to kill the Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
Ayittey Powers appeared before the court on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a day after the Accra Regional Police Command arrested him in connection with a video circulating on social media in which he is alleged to have threatened the life of the NSA Director-General.
The court ordered that the former boxer be remanded for one week as the police continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the alleged threat. He is expected to return to court on September 2, 2026.
The case came to the attention of the police after the video allegedly featuring Ayittey Powers was circulated widely on social media.
According to the Accra Regional Police Command, the content of the video prompted the authorities to take action and establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged threat.
He subsequently reported himself to the police after receiving an invitation from the Accra Regional Police Headquarters in connection with the video.
Following his appearance before the police, he was arrested and detained while investigations were initiated.
The Accra Regional Police Command had earlier issued a statement confirming the arrest of the 46-year-old former boxer.
The police described the matter as an alleged threat of death against Yaw Ampofo Ankrah and said the suspect was assisting with investigations.
