The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Sports Ministry are expected to appoint an interim coach to lead the Black Stars in their next two Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Somalia in November.
The move follows the departure of Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz, who stepped down after Ghana suffered consecutive defeats at the start of their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
A five-member committee established by the Sports Ministry and the GFA has been tasked with recommending a replacement for Queiroz. The committee has until Friday, October 9, to submit its initial recommendations.
According to reports, however, the committee is expected to recommend an interim coach to take charge of the two upcoming matches against Somalia while the search for a substantive head coach continues.
Both fixtures are scheduled to be played at the Accra Sports Stadium, with the interim coach expected to remain in charge until a permanent appointment is made.
The committee’s mandate is also expected to be extended after Friday’s submission, allowing its members to continue working on the selection of a substantive head coach for the national team.
The committee is chaired by former GFA vice-president Fred Pappoe and includes former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah, former Ghana international Anthony Baffoe, Faisal Chibsah and Agbesi Dzakpasu, a Legal practitioner and football administrator.
Queiroz’s departure came after Ghana endured a disastrous start to the 2027 AFCON qualifiers. The Black Stars opened their Group C campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké before suffering another setback against The Gambia in Accra.
Ghana took a two-goal lead at the Accra Sports Stadium but were unable to hold on as The Gambia staged a comeback to win 4-2. The consecutive defeats have left Ghana bottom of Group C without a point after two matches, putting the Black Stars under significant pressure to revive their qualification campaign.
Ghana are attempting to return to the AFCON after failing to qualify for the 2025 tournament in Morocco.
