The Transition towards digital payments gained further momentum in 2025, with internet and mobile banking recording substantial increases in both transaction volumes and values, according to the Bank of Ghana’s 2025 Payment Systems Oversight Annual Report.

The value of internet banking transactions increased by 80.7 per cent, rising from GH¢212.44 billion in 2024 to GH¢383.82 billion in 2025. The growth was accompanied by a sharp increase in the number of transactions, which climbed from 26.06 million in 2024 to 47.59 million in 2025.

Mobile banking also recorded significant growth during the year, with the value of transactions increasing by 130.5 per cent year-on-year. The volume of mobile banking transactions, meanwhile, grew by 31.6 per cent.

The strong performance of both channels points to growing public confidence in digital fund-transfer services and an accelerating shift away from cash-based transactions towards electronic and cashless payment options.

The Bank of Ghana attributed the transformation of Ghana’s electronic payment landscape to continuous technological innovation, proactive initiatives by financial institutions and sustained regulatory support.

According to the central bank, these developments have helped create a more robust and dynamic payment ecosystem, with different digital channels increasingly supporting everyday financial activity.

Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) have continued to serve as important access points for cash and cashless services, while Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals have become increasingly important to Ghana’s transition towards a more efficient cash-lite economy.
