Rev Owusu-Bempah Begs NPP MP, Ayew Afriye Over GH¢10m Defamation Suit

BY GRACE ZIGAH

The founder and leader of Glorious Word Power Ministries International, Rev. Isaac Owusu-Bempah, has apologised to Effiduase/Asokore Member of Parliament, Dr Nana Ayew Afriye, after the legislator was wrongly linked to an alleged plot to cause chaos at the church.

The apology was delivered on Sunday, October 4, 2026, by Rev Charles Owusu, a junior pastor of the church, who said he had been authorised by Rev Owusu-Bempah to publicly seek forgiveness from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmaker.

Addressing the congregation, Charles Owusu said the church had now accepted that Dr Ayew Afriye was not involved in the alleged plot and that his name had been wrongly associated with the matter.

He explained that although individuals were allegedly planning to cause trouble at the church, those plans had since been abandoned, adding that the MP had been implicated by third parties without justification.

“I stand on behalf of the church and the leadership and what I am saying is what my senior pastor has agreed. What we are saying is that those people who planned to do evil have rescinded their evil plans. Now we know that he is innocent in the case, and people just used his name in the whole plot,” Charles Owusu said.

He subsequently appealed to Dr Ayew Afriye to accept the apology and withdraw the legal action he had instituted against Rev Owusu-Bempah.

“What you said about our senior pastor, we forgive. So, you also, please, let us withdraw the court issue because your name, which was mentioned as part of the plotters to cause chaos in the church, is not true. So, let us make peace,” he appealed.

Defamation lawsuit

The development follows a GH¢10 million defamation suit filed by Dr Ayew Afriye against Rev Owusu-Bempah over remarks in which the pastor allegedly accused the MP and other prominent NPP figures of being involved in a plot to attack him and his congregation.

Among those named were Anthony Abayifa Karbo, Sammy Awuku, Opare Ansah and Dr Ayew Afriye.
At the time, Rev Owusu-Bempah alleged that the individuals were involved in plans to cause harm to him and the church.

Dr Ayew Afriye subsequently turned to the courts, arguing that the allegations were defamatory and had the potential to damage his reputation, integrity and standing in society.

In his suit, the MP is seeking GH¢10 million in damages, a declaration that the statements were defamatory and an order compelling Rev Owusu-Bempah to publicly retract the allegations.

The latest apology therefore represents an attempt by the church leadership to resolve the dispute outside the courtroom.

Rev Charles Owusu urged the MP to consider the apology in the spirit of reconciliation and withdraw the case.
