A Circuit Court in Accra has sentenced a 43-year-old TikTok content creator, Camilla Alhassan, to one year imprisonment after she pleaded guilty to charges of offensive conduct and publication of false news over a series of videos she posted on social media about President John Dramani Mahama.
According to proceedings before the court, Camilla Alhassan published a series of TikTok videos between June 30 and July 5, 2026, in which she alleged that President Mahama had sacrificed 32 cows as part of rituals to secure political power.
She further claimed in the videos that the government’s initiative to distribute sanitary pads to victims affected by the devastating June 29 floods was intended to conceal the alleged sacrifices.
The prosecution charged her with offensive conduct and publication of false news, arguing that the statements were false and capable of misleading the public.
During the hearing, the accused pleaded guilty to the charges before the Circuit Court.
The court subsequently convicted her on the offences and imposed a custodial sentence of one year imprisonment.
However, one of the charges initially brought against her—electronic abuse—was struck out by the court.
Speaking after the judgment, defence counsel Kwadwo Gyamfi Bonsu explained that the court ruled it lacked the legal jurisdiction to determine the electronic abuse charge and therefore removed it from the case.
Despite pleading for leniency on behalf of his client, the lawyer said the court considered the increasing frequency of false and offensive publications on social media and concluded that a custodial sentence was necessary to serve as a deterrent to others.
