3 Get GH¢1.7m Bail Over Robbery, Money Laundering

The Accra Circuit Court Nine has granted three persons bail in the sum of GH¢1.7 million with two sureties each over alleged robbery, money laundering and causing unlawful damage.

The accused are Musa Abdul Aziz Mamoud, also known as Justin Martin, 34, a stock trader; Donatus Kwame Donkor, 37, a carpenter; and Edgar Donkor, 34, a fashion designer.

The Court, presided over by Joseph Yennuban Kunsong, ordered that one of the sureties must justify the bail with landed property equivalent to the bail sum.

The second surety must be a person of substance residing within the jurisdiction of the Court.

The accused persons are also required to furnish the Court Registry with copies of their identity cards.

Mamoud, Donatus and Edgar pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery.

Mamoud and Edgar also denied causing unlawful damage, while Mamoud pleaded not guilty to a charge of money laundering.

The case has been adjourned to June 10, 2026, for a Case Management Conference.

The Court directed the prosecution to file its disclosures within seven days and serve the accused persons.

Counsel for the accused persons, praying for bail, argued that the prosecution was not ready to commence trial and that the constitutional rights of their clients to bail were being abused.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Raymond Ackom, opposing the bail application, said the nature of the offences and the severity of the punishment could compel the accused persons to abscond if granted bail.

Presenting the facts, ASP Ackom said the complainant, Bhoati Sharma, an Indian national and manager of Theia Jewelries, resided at Tse-Addo.

He said Mamoud, also known as Justin Martin, resided at Anyaa Market, Donatus at Osu and Edgar at Oyarifa.

According to the prosecution, on February 15, 2025, the accused persons allegedly planned to attack the complainant’s shop at East Legon.

ASP Ackom said Mamoud allegedly dressed in a brown long-sleeved shirt, black trousers, ash hand gloves and a black mask, and armed himself with a hammer and pepper spray.

Donatus allegedly wore black jeans, a white hoodie and a black mask, and armed himself with a firecracker.

Edgar, the prosecution said, wore ash-coloured jeans trousers, a black hoodie and a cream-coloured helmet, and allegedly armed himself with pepper spray.

The Court heard that Mamoud allegedly entered the shop at top speed, frightening the salesgirl, while Edgar subsequently entered the shop to prevent her from leaving.

A few minutes later, Donatus allegedly stood in front of the shop and ignited a firecracker to scare people within the mall.

The prosecution said Mamoud and Edgar allegedly collected gold chains, pendants, earrings, bands, bracelets and other jewellery valued at US$150,000 from the shop and escaped on a Honda Jungle motorbike.

ASP Ackom said the complainant petitioned the Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department, leading to the arrest of Mamoud on March 24, 2026, based on intelligence gathered by the Police.

A search conducted at his residence allegedly uncovered items believed to have been used in the robbery, including two black masks, a hammer, pepper spray, a toy gun, a crash helmet, assorted jewellery, a gold detector and a gold weighing scale.

The prosecution said Edgar was arrested the same day after being invited to assist investigations.

Donatus was also arrested at his residence in Osu on March 26, 2026, where the Honda Jungle motorbike allegedly used in the robbery was retrieved.

Investigations further revealed that Mamoud allegedly sold some of the stolen items to unidentified persons and used part of the proceeds to acquire an FJ Cruiser 4×4 vehicle.

Police said investigations into the case were ongoing.
