Health authorities in the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality have stepped up measures to contain a measles outbreak after four cases were confirmed at Kpone Kokompe.
The Medical Superintendent of the Kpone District Hospital, Dr Jemima Quarte Mensah, disclosed the development during the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly’s General Assembly meeting at Kpone, where she outlined measures being implemented to prevent further transmission of the viral infection.
According to Dr Mensah, health officials have intensified disease surveillance and contact tracing in the affected community, with other interventions also underway to contain and ultimately eradicate the infection.
She urged residents, particularly parents and guardians, to remain vigilant and report suspected cases promptly to health facilities for proper assessment and treatment.
Dr Mensah cautioned the public against treating suspected measles cases with traditional remedies, local gin or other unapproved methods, warning that self-medication could worsen patients’ conditions and, in severe cases, result in preventable deaths.
“Parents should not hesitate to take their children to health facilities when they suspect any signs of measles,” she advised.
She also called on churches, schools and other institutions where large numbers of people gather to strengthen preventive measures, including improved hygiene, monitoring of persons showing symptoms and encouraging suspected cases to seek medical attention.
The Medical Superintendent stressed that cooperation from residents would be critical to containing the outbreak, particularly through early reporting and compliance with public health directives.
