The International Federation of Women Lawyers, Ghana (FIDA Ghana), has expressed deep condolences to the nation following the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight individuals, including two cabinet ministers, on August 6, 2025.
The incident occurred near Obuasi in the Ashanti Region while the victims were en route to launch the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme aimed at combating illegal mining.
The Victims
The deceased are:
– Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence
– Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology
– Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
– Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)
– Samuel Aboagye, former Obuasi East parliamentary candidate
– Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, military officer
– Flying Officer Manaen Twum-Ampadu, military officer
– Sergeant Ernest Addo, military officer
FIDA Ghana’s Condolence Message
FIDA Executive Director, Susan Aryeetey, extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, President John Dramani Mahama, the armed forces, and the Government and People of Ghana.
She emphasized the importance of prioritizing the welfare of the widows and children of the fallen heroes.
Call To Action
During his vetting, Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah advocated for a multifaceted approach to addressing the national menace of galamsey, emphasizing community engagement, public education, and alternative livelihoods.
FIDA Ghana prays that his advocacy translates into lasting action to protect communities, especially women and children, from the destructive practice of illegal mining.
Investigation And Tribute
An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
The Ghana Chamber of Mines has pledged to honour the legacy of the deceased by promoting sustainable and responsible mining practices.
Dr. Nii Moi Thompson, Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), urged the government to intensify its fight against galamsey as a lasting tribute to the fallen heroes.
