In a joint operation, the Akwatia District Police Command and the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Demkyembour in the Eastern Region, Umar Ahmed Tutu, have arrested a group of women suspected to be engaging in prostitution.
The arrests were made during a search of properties developed on government lands that had been earmarked for demolition.
Authorities discovered a compound believed to be housing the women, who are said to be Nigerians.
The Operation
The operation was carried out by the Akwatia Police Command, led by Supt. George Aboagye, in collaboration with the DCE.
The authorities had been monitoring the area and had received complaints about the alleged prostitution activities.
During the operation, the police arrested several women who were suspected to be involved in the illegal business.
Prostitution Laws
Prostitution is illegal in Ghana, and the suspects have since been taken into police custody.
They are expected to be arraigned before court in the coming days.
The law prohibits soliciting, brothel-keeping, and pimping, and those found guilty can face fines and imprisonment.
Community Impact
The arrests have been welcomed by the community, who are concerned about the impact of prostitution on the area.
The operation is seen as a step towards maintaining law and order in the community and protecting the public from the negative effects of prostitution.
Future Plans
The Akwatia Police Command and the DCE have assured the public that they will continue to crack down on illegal activities in the area.
They are working to identify and prosecute those involved in prostitution and other illicit activities.
