As the senior women’s national football team, the Black Queens, prepare to battle Egypt in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers, winger Princess Marfo has assured Ghanaians that the team is fully prepared to deliver victory and reclaim its place among Africa’s elite.

The crucial first-leg encounter was scheduled for Thursday, October 23, in the Egyptian city of Suez, with the return leg set for Sunday in Accra.

The aggregate winner will progress to the final qualifying round of the continental tournament to be hosted next year.

Speaking ahead of the clash, the Denmark-based attacker, who plies her trade with FC Nordsjaelland, expressed optimism about the team’s readiness and mental fortitude.

“Training has been really serious; it’s been very detailed, and we can’t wait to start the game because we know how important this game is for us. I believe with the preparation we’ve had, we would go far,” Marfo told the Ghana Football Association (GFA) media team.

She added that the players are aware of the weight of expectation from the Ghanaian public and are determined not to disappoint.

A Mission of Redemption

The Black Queens have endured a difficult journey in recent years, having missed out on the last two editions of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Ghana’s absence from the continental showpiece has been a major talking point, especially for a team that once stood as one of the most formidable forces in African women’s football.

The team’s last notable achievement at WAFCON came in 2018 when Ghana hosted the tournament but suffered an early exit in the group stages.

Since then, efforts have been made by the GFA to rebuild the team, with the appointment of a new technical direction and the inclusion of younger, Europe-based talents like Princess Marfo to strengthen the squad.
