A cloud of grief has descended on the Assin South District of the Central Region following a devastating road accident involving a school bus that claimed the lives of two pupils and left dozens of others injured.
The tragic incident occurred on the evening of Monday, June 1, 2026, along the Assin Homaho road when a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus carrying pupils of Alice Elites Academy, a preparatory school located at Assin Edubiase, was involved in a serious accident.
The two deceased pupils, a boy and a girl whose identities have not yet been publicly disclosed, were among more than 40 schoolchildren travelling in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
The accident has sent shockwaves through the Assin Edubiase community, leaving parents, teachers, school authorities and residents struggling to come to terms with the heartbreaking loss of the young students.
Confirming the incident, the Central North Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), DSP Wonder Lumor, disclosed that emergency response teams acted swiftly to rescue the injured children and transport them to nearby health facilities for urgent medical attention.
According to DSP Lumor, a total of 40 pupils sustained varying degrees of injuries in the accident and were immediately evacuated to medical facilities within the district.
Twenty-two of the injured pupils were rushed to the St. Francis Xavier Hospital for treatment, while another 18 were transported to the Assin Edubiase Health Centre, where medical personnel worked to stabilize their conditions.
Health authorities and emergency responders reportedly worked through the night to provide treatment and support to the injured children and their families.
In what has brought some relief to the affected families, DSP Lumor later confirmed that all 40 injured pupils responded positively to treatment and have since been discharged from the hospitals to reunite with their families.
Despite the successful treatment of the injured victims, the deaths of the two pupils have left the community in deep mourning.
Parents and relatives of the victims have been receiving condolences from residents, traditional leaders and members of the education community, as many struggle to understand how what should have been an ordinary journey ended in tragedy.
