Sixty-three out of 87 Minority Members of Parliament of the New Patriotic Party, NPP, across all regions are rallying behind former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s future leader ahead of 2028 elections
In a strong show of unity and political conviction, the 63 NPP MPs have publicly declared their total and unwavering support for Dr. Bawumia to become the party’s next flagbearer.
The declaration, led by Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, MP for Mampong and former Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, was contained in a detailed statement issued from Parliament and signed by all supporting MPs.
The statement, titled “Statement of Support and Declaration for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,” described the former Vice President as the embodiment of the NPP’s founding tradition — visionary, diligent, and forward-thinking.
The Declaration and Its Context
According to the MPs, their endorsement stems from a deep conviction based on Dr. Bawumia’s performance, discipline, and contributions to national development.
The statement recalls his long-standing service to the party since 2008 when he first joined Nana Akufo-Addo as running mate, through to his role as Vice President since 2017.
The MPs praised Dr. Bawumia’s transformative role in Ghana’s digitalization, financial inclusion, and modernization of public service delivery, citing initiatives such as the Ghana Card integration, mobile money interoperability, digital property addressing, e-pharmacy, and the digitalization of public records.
“Dr. Bawumia has brought clarity to governance, inspired innovation, and built systems that work,” the statement said. “He is a leader who respects our history yet reimagines our future.”
The lawmakers said their endorsement was not based on sentiment but conviction that the Vice President represents “the next chapter of the NPP’s vision — a future built on competence, innovation, unity and hope.”

A Call to Party Delegates
The MPs appealed passionately to NPP delegates across the country to “reward loyalty, humility, and hard work with trust.”
They emphasized that Dr. Bawumia’s leadership represented the continuity and renewal the party needed to regain power and move Ghana forward.
“Dr. Bawumia is our choice, the people’s choice, the Party’s strength, and the future,” the statement declared.
“He carries Danquah’s courage, Busia’s intellect, and Dombo’s humility and unifying heart.”
The MPs urged all members to rally behind the Vice President as the party prepares for its next leadership contest.
A Symbol of Unity and Continuity
According to the group, Dr. Bawumia’s rise reflects the NPP’s enduring philosophy of freedom, democracy, and development through enterprise — a legacy of the Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition.
They described him as a leader capable of uniting the party, inspiring innovation, and earning the confidence of the Ghanaian people.
“He has been tested, trusted, and proven,” they stated. “The torch has been lit and the vision is clear. Let us move forward together, united in purpose, guided by faith, and inspired by the future we believe in.”
The declaration marks one of the most significant political endorsements yet within the NPP as internal campaigns quietly intensify ahead of the selection of the party’s next presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections in January 2026.
