A shocking incident of domestic violence captured on video at Ofankor in the Ga East Municipality has led to the arrest of a man seen brutally assaulting a woman believed to be his wife.

The video, which went viral on Facebook, sparked national outrage and renewed calls for stronger action against domestic abuse in Ghana.

The Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) confirmed in a press release dated November 18, 2025, that the suspect, John Odartey Lamptey, was arrested on Monday, November 17, 2025, at his family residence.

The arrest followed swift public pressure after the violent footage began circulating widely on social media.

According to the CID, the situation intensified when two of Lamptey’s siblings — Grace Kushie Lamptey and Louis Odartey Lamptey — attempted to attack a female tenant they suspected of recording and sharing the disturbing video. Police officers intervened, arrested the two siblings, and rescued the tenant to ensure her safety.

Meanwhile, the woman who was assaulted in the video had reportedly fled the home before police officers arrived.

Authorities say efforts are underway to locate her, provide protection, and ensure she receives necessary medical and psychological support.

The police reaffirmed their commitment to protecting victims of domestic violence and ensuring that offenders face the full rigours of the law.

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) also issued a strong statement condemning the assault.

Describing the act as “barbaric” and a gross violation of human rights, the Ministry emphasised that no individual has the right to abuse another person under any circumstance.

The Gender Minister has contacted the police to ensure a thorough investigation and prosecution of everyone involved.

The Ministry further urged the public to report domestic or sexual violence cases promptly, emphasizing that such incidents remain a major national concern. It encouraged witnesses with relevant information to assist law enforcement agencies.
