Austria Lustenau have bolstered their attacking options with the signing of Ghanaian forward Asumah Abubakar, a move the club believes could prove decisive as they navigate the second half of the Austrian second-tier season.
Sporting director Dieter Alge has described the acquisition as a strategic addition, highlighting the striker’s experience, leadership qualities, and goal-scoring threat.
The 28-year-old attacker completed his move to Austria Lustenau earlier this month, joining the Planet Pure Stadion outfit on a short-term deal that runs until the end of the current season.
He arrived as a free agent after mutually parting ways with Maltese Premier League side Birkirkara FC during the most recent transfer window.
Club Confidence in New Signing
Speaking on the signing, Alge expressed strong confidence in Abubakar’s ability to influence both performances and dressing-room culture.
According to the sporting director, the Ghanaian forward offers more than just attacking quality.
“We are very pleased to have signed an experienced striker like Abu for our club. He brings not only quality and a goal threat, but also valuable experience that will help our team both on and off the pitch,” Alge said
Austria Lustenau are hoping Abubakar’s arrival will inject consistency and composure into their frontline as the club pushes to improve its league standing in the remainder of the campaign.
A Career Shaped Across Europe
Abubakar, who was born in Kumasi, brings a wealth of experience from across Europe and beyond. Over the course of his career, he has featured for several clubs in different leagues, including Swiss sides Grasshoppers Zurich, FC Luzern, FC Lugano, and SC Kriens, as well as Australian outfit Brisbane Roar.
His most recent spell with Birkirkara FC in Malta added another chapter to a career defined by adaptability and exposure to varied footballing cultures.
This breadth of experience is seen by Austria Lustenau as a key asset, particularly in guiding younger players within the squad.
International Eligibility
Despite being Ghanaian by birth, Abubakar previously represented Portugal at youth level, a reflection of his early development in Europe.
However, he remains eligible to play for the Ghana national team at senior level, keeping the door open for potential international recognition should his club performances warrant attention.
A Calculated Move For Both Parties
For Austria Lustenau, the signing represents a low-risk, high-upside move—adding a proven striker without a transfer fee at a crucial stage of the season.
For Abubakar, the move offers an opportunity to revive momentum, showcase his experience, and play a central role in a competitive European league.
