Kumasi Asante Kotoko Sporting Club has once again been plunged into reflection and sorrow as it marked one year since the tragic death of one of its most devoted supporters, Francis Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Nana Pooley.

The club’s remembrance comes exactly twelve months after the supporter lost his life during violent disturbances at Nsoatre, an incident that remains one of the darkest moments in Ghanaian football in recent years.

In a solemn statement to commemorate the anniversary, the club described the incident as a senseless act of hooliganism that abruptly ended the life of a passionate football lover whose only offence was his unwavering support for the sport.

Kotoko stressed that the circumstances surrounding Pooley’s death continue to represent a painful reminder of the dangers of violence at match venues.

The club portrayed Nana Pooley as far more than an ordinary supporter, calling him a symbol of the joy, unity and energy that football is supposed to inspire among communities.

According to Kotoko, Pooley’s presence in the stands embodied the spirit of the game — one built on passion, camaraderie and celebration rather than hostility.

“One year on, the pain of his absence is still felt every day,” the club noted, adding that although his life was taken too soon, the memories, joy and love he brought to Kotoko’s supporters can never be erased.

Kotoko further reiterated that football must remain a space of happiness and togetherness, making Pooley’s death a tragedy that should never be repeated.

The club warned that such acts of violence threaten not only the safety of supporters but also the integrity and future of the domestic game.

On the anniversary, the Porcupine Warriors renewed their call for justice, insisting that delays in accountability only deepen the wounds of those left behind.

Kotoko maintained that justice for Nana Pooley is not only about closure for his family and fellow supporters but also an important step toward restoring confidence in safety at Ghana Premier League match centres.

The club also recommitted itself to advocating for safer football environments, where fans can gather without fear and where stadiums are protected from violent scenes that have no place in sport.
