The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has raised alarm over a growing pattern of attacks and intimidation against health workers, warning that the safety of medical personnel and patients is increasingly under threat across the country.
In a press statement dated 21 February 2026 and referenced DG/2026/PR 7, the Service disclosed that several incidents have recently occurred in which health staff were assaulted while carrying out their routine professional duties.
The developments, according to the GHS, are deeply troubling and represent a dangerous erosion of respect for healthcare professionals.
The statement described the attacks as unacceptable, stressing that healthcare delivery depends not only on professional competence but also on mutual respect between service providers and the public.
The Service emphasized that while it remains committed to delivering quality care to patients and clients, it equally expects its personnel to be treated with dignity and basic human respect.
Health sector observers note that tensions between patients, families, and health workers have been increasing in recent years, driven by long waiting times, pressure on facilities, staff shortages, and systemic challenges within the healthcare system.
These pressures have sometimes spilled over into verbal abuse, threats, and physical confrontations in hospitals and clinics, placing frontline workers at risk.
Against this background, the GHS has taken a firm institutional stance, declaring its full support for staff who continue to perform their duties professionally under difficult conditions.
The Service stated clearly that it will not tolerate any act that compromises the safety, wellbeing, or effectiveness of its workforce.
“All forms of aggression, intimidation, and violence against health workers are strongly condemned,” the statement said, signaling a zero-tolerance approach to attacks on personnel.
