A tragic road accident on the Tarkwa–Bogoso stretch in the Western Region has claimed the lives of nine people, including a 28-year-old nurse, her infant child, and her younger sister, in one of the latest incidents raising concerns over road safety on major highways.

The victims—Mary Akomah, her nine-month-old baby Calia Karikari Bonsu, and her 24-year-old sister Beatrice Nyarko—were part of passengers travelling in a Toyota Voxy that reportedly collided with a tipper truck at Yareyeya on the evening of April 14, 2026.

Preliminary reports indicate that Mary Akomah, a nurse, was en route from Tarkwa to Takoradi to sit for a promotional examination or attend an interview.

In preparation, she had asked her sister to accompany her and care for the baby while she focused on her professional engagement. Tragically, the journey was cut short by the fatal collision.

According to local sources, including Tarkwa FM, the accident occurred around 9:00 p.m. and involved multiple casualties, with two children among the deceased.

Eyewitness footage circulating online shows the white Toyota Voxy severely mangled, as emergency responders and bystanders gathered at the scene.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the victims’ hometown of Mampong in the Ashanti Region, where the family is said to have been based.

Images of funeral posters featuring the two sisters and the infant have since surfaced on social media, deepening public grief over the loss.

The tragedy has also sparked renewed public debate over road safety and vehicle suitability for long-distance travel, with some social media users calling for stricter regulation of certain vehicle types, including the Toyota Voxy, on highways.
