Oscar-winning filmmaker Pavel Talankin is at the centre of an unusual international incident after his Academy Award statuette went missing following a security check at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Talankin, who recently won the Oscar for his documentary Mr Nobody Against Putin, said he had packed the prestigious award in his carry-on luggage while preparing to board a flight to Germany on Wednesday.

However, airport security officials reportedly stopped him, arguing that the statuette could potentially be used as a weapon and therefore could not be taken onboard in the cabin.

According to accounts, airline staff from Lufthansa assisted the filmmaker in repacking the Oscar into a box using protective materials so it could be transported as checked luggage, as he did not originally have a checked bag.

But upon arrival in Germany, Talankin discovered that the award was no longer in his possession, prompting immediate concern and an ongoing search.

In a statement, Lufthansa expressed regret over the incident, assuring that it is treating the matter with urgency. “Our team is conducting a comprehensive internal search to ensure the Oscar is found and returned as quickly as possible,” the airline said.

The situation has drawn attention from key institutions, including the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Transportation Security Administration, both of which have been contacted for clarification regarding the handling of the award during security checks.

Talankin’s collaborator, executive producer Robin Hessman, revealed that she had to assist via speakerphone during the airport exchange due to language barriers.

She noted that the filmmaker had previously travelled internationally with both his Oscar and BAFTA awards without any complications, raising questions about inconsistencies in security enforcement.

The incident has also sparked debate online, with some observers questioning whether high-profile Hollywood figures would have faced similar treatment.

Hessman herself remarked, “This wouldn’t have happened to Leonardo DiCaprio,” suggesting possible disparities in how such situations are handled.

Talankin’s documentary, Mr Nobody Against Putin, explores the rise of state-driven propaganda in Russian schools following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The filmmaker, who once worked within the Russian education system, is now living in exile in Europe due to safety concerns.

The film has reportedly been banned on several Russian streaming platforms over claims it promotes extremism.
