Ghanaian dancehall artiste Shatta Wale has taken his response to the ShattaFest UK incident beyond public statements, personally visiting an injured fan at his home in London and pledging continued support to the family.
The musician visited the fan, identified as Abraham, following the incident that disrupted his ShattaFest concert in London and left several patrons injured amid severe crowd-control challenges.
The visit offered Shatta Wale an opportunity to meet one of the affected fans privately, check on his condition and express regret over what happened during the event.
During the emotional encounter, the artiste arrived with a number of gifts for Abraham and his family, including cash, flowers, Hotwav mobile phones and a gift card, in what appeared to be an effort to offer both material and personal support during the fan’s recovery.
Shatta Wale also attempted to lighten the atmosphere by asking Abraham to perform one of his songs. The fan’s participation appeared to create a more relaxed moment during the visit and gave the artiste an opportunity to witness first-hand the young man’s enthusiasm for his music.
The dancehall star said he was particularly touched by Abraham’s knowledge and passion for his songs despite living in London.
“Most of the time, when I see that someone loves me that much, the connection is there. I was asking myself, how can a child from London sing my songs like that?”
Shatta Wale said Abraham’s choice of song during the encounter made the moment even more significant to him.
While reflecting on the circumstances that brought them together, he expressed regret over the incident and apologised to the fan.
“His choice of song shows he’s really seen his prophecy come true. I just want to say I’m so sorry for whatever happened.”
From compensation to a personal relationship
Rather than treating the visit as a one-off gesture, Shatta Wale indicated that he wanted to maintain a relationship with Abraham and his family.
He promised that whenever he returned to London for performances, Abraham and his family would receive complimentary tickets to his shows.
“With the way I’m welcomed here, I can’t just leave like that. Anytime I will be having a show in London, you and the whole family will get free tickets.”
The musician also told the family that he intended to keep in contact with them and would consider their home a place he could visit whenever he was in London.
“From now onwards, I will take this house as my house. Anytime I come to London, I will pass by and eat.”
He added that the family would remain in direct contact with him so they could attend his future performances in the city.
“We will also take contacts, so anytime you hear I have a show in London, you and the family can just show up.”
Shatta Wale explained that before visiting Abraham, he had considered what form of assistance would be most appropriate. He said the circumstances made him realise that financial assistance alone could not adequately address what had happened.
“When I was coming, I was wondering what to actually do for him, but I realised that there are some things that happen and we can’t just give out money.”
A personal response to the ShattaFest controversy
The visit comes against the backdrop of the controversy surrounding ShattaFest UK, which was disrupted after serious crowd-control and safety concerns emerged at the event.
The concert was halted amid reports of overcrowding and a surge of patrons at the venue, with emergency intervention becoming necessary as authorities sought to prevent the situation from escalating.
The incident generated considerable public discussion about event organisation, crowd management and the responsibilities of promoters and artistes when large numbers of fans attend concerts.
Shatta Wale subsequently criticised aspects of the organisation of the event while also acknowledging the intervention of emergency personnel.
