Lawyers for the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South and former Registrar of the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, have rejected what they describe as “false and misleading” claims being made against their client by Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Ireland, Sabah Zita Benson.
In a statement issued on Thursday, August 13, 2026, Sarkodie Baffour Awuah & Partners, acting for Dr. Agyemang, accused the High Commissioner of attempting to subject their client to public ridicule over allegations connected to the award of scholarships during the previous administration.
The lawyers maintained that Dr. Agyemang performed his duties as Registrar of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat diligently and denied any wrongdoing in the discharge of his responsibilities.
The statement comes against the background of ongoing investigations into alleged corruption surrounding the award and administration of scholarships during the tenure of the previous government.
According to the lawyers, the investigations have already been initiated by the appropriate state security and investigative institutions.
They therefore questioned the decision by the High Commissioner to publicly comment on the matter while the investigative processes remain ongoing.
“Our client maintains that he executed his work as former Registrar of the Scholarship Secretariat with utmost diligence and therefore denies any wrongdoing,” the lawyers stated.
The legal team argued that because investigations are already underway, the appropriate course of action should be to allow the relevant state institutions to complete their work and establish the facts rather than subjecting individuals involved to public condemnation before the process is concluded.
The lawyers further noted that the High Commissioner herself has acknowledged the existence of investigations into the allegations, making her decision to resort to public commentary, in their view, “regrettable and unwarranted.”
They alleged that the latest comments were not an isolated occurrence, claiming that the High Commissioner had previously made similar allegations against their client despite the fact that investigations by state security and investigative agencies were still pending.
The legal team said Dr. Agyemang has not avoided scrutiny but has instead made himself available to the relevant state institutions and fully cooperated with the investigations.
According to the lawyers, their client has done so because he wants the allegations to be thoroughly examined, his name cleared if the evidence does not support the accusations, and the matter brought to a definitive conclusion.
The statement also sought to draw a distinction between legitimate institutional investigations and what the lawyers consider to be public commentary capable of prejudicing the reputation of a person whose alleged wrongdoing has not been established through due process.
Dr. Agyemang, the lawyers stressed, remains a law-abiding citizen who is committed to the rule of law and constitutional due process.
They said his current focus is on his responsibilities as Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South and on serving his constituents, while he remains confident that the ongoing investigative processes will eventually establish the truth.
The controversy also places renewed attention on the former Registrar’s tenure at the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, an institution responsible for administering government scholarship opportunities for Ghanaian students both locally and abroad.
Dr. Agyemang’s lawyers have made clear that they do not intend to accept what they consider to be attempts to determine their client’s guilt through public statements while formal investigations remain incomplete.
They maintained that their client has cooperated with the relevant authorities and remains prepared to answer any legitimate questions arising from the investigations.
The legal team concluded by expressing confidence that the truth would ultimately prevail and that Dr. Agyemang would be vindicated.
