Ghana’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers have been handed a potential setback after midfielder Thomas Partey was ruled out of Al-Shabab’s 1-1 draw with Al Hazem on Sunday because of a knock.
Partey, who only made his debut for the Saudi Pro League side last week in their entertaining 3-3 draw against Al Riyadh, was missing from the matchday squad after suffering the minor injury.
The setback is not currently considered serious, but its timing has placed the midfielder’s fitness under close observation as Ghana prepares for a crucial September international window.
The 33-year-old joined Al-Shabab on a one-year contract as a free agent following his departure from Arsenal and is expected to play an important role for the Saudi club.
His availability is equally important to the Black Stars, with Ghana set to open their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign against Côte d’Ivoire in Bouake on September 24 before hosting The Gambia in Accra three days later.
Partey remains one of the most experienced players in Ghana’s midfield and was part of the Black Stars’ 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign. His leadership and experience could prove valuable as Ghana attempts to secure a return to the continental showpiece.
The Black Stars missed the previous Africa Cup of Nations tournament, making the upcoming qualifiers particularly significant for a team determined to avoid another disappointing qualification campaign.
