President John Dramani Mahama has dissolved the Governing Board of the National Sports Authority (NSA), with immediate effect, in a move that forms part of a broader restructuring of the governing boards of several state-owned institutions.
The decision, communicated in a letter dated September 2, 2026, brings an early end to the tenure of the NSA board, which was originally constituted to serve from 2025 to 2029. The development places the administration of Ghana’s sports infrastructure and related policy oversight at a significant transition point.
The affected institutions have been directed to take the necessary steps under their respective laws and governing instruments to formally notify members of the dissolved boards. Until replacement boards are appointed, the existing management teams are expected to continue overseeing the day-to-day operations of the institutions.
However, the management of the affected organisations has been placed under an important restriction during the transition period. They have been directed not to undertake major policy, financial or contractual decisions that would normally require board approval unless they first obtain authorisation from the appropriate authority.
The dissolved board was chaired by Dr Fred Awaah and brought together representatives from key government ministries, sporting bodies, security institutions, tertiary institutions and professional sports development circles.
Members included Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, representing the National Sports Authority; Fuseini Bawa of the National Sports College; Samuel Duku Sarfo from the Ministry of Sports and Recreation; Nana Adwoa Owusu-Amoh from the Ministry of Finance; and Is-Haku Al-Hassan from the Ministry of Education.
The board also included Col. Richard Kofi Akoto, representing the Security Services Sports Association; Dr Luguterah Austin Wontepaga for tertiary institutions; National Paralympic Committee representative Samson Deen; and Ghana Olympic Committee representative Richard Kofi Akpokavie.
Other members were distinguished sporting personalities Hajia Sulemana Zenabu and Alhaji Iddris Muntawakilu Ahmed, alongside Prof. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong, Theresa Osahene and Hamilton Kweku Nixon, who represented persons with experience in sports development.
