The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has handed Carlos Queiroz another opportunity to lead the Black Stars, reappointing the Portuguese coach ahead of Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The decision, announced by the GFA on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, ends weeks of uncertainty over the coach’s future following the conclusion of his previous mandate, which included Ghana’s participation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The GFA confirmed that it had reached an agreement with Queiroz for a new coaching mandate that will begin with the upcoming international window.

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement with Carlos Queiroz for his appointment as Head Coach of the Black Stars for the next phase of the team’s programme,” the Association said in its announcement.

Queiroz’s previous spell was originally expected to end after the World Cup, where Ghana reached the Round of 32 before suffering a 1-0 defeat to Colombia. His continuation in the role, however, followed discussions involving the GFA, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the coach.

The parties subsequently reached an agreement for the experienced Portuguese tactician to remain in charge under a fresh mandate, giving him the responsibility of guiding Ghana into the next phase of its international programme.

His immediate assignment will be to prepare the Black Stars for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers as Ghana attempts to secure a place at the continental tournament after missing the previous edition.

The reappointment also provides Queiroz with an opportunity to build on the work he began during the World Cup cycle while addressing the areas that require improvement as Ghana enters another important period of international football.

The GFA pointed to Queiroz’s extensive international experience, technical expertise and familiarity with the Black Stars as key reasons why he is considered well placed to lead the team forward.
