American R&B superstar Chris Brown has avoided immediate imprisonment after a London court handed him an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, for his role in an attack on music producer Abraham Diaw at a London nightclub in February 2023.

The Grammy-winning singer was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court after pleading guilty to one count of affray over the incident at Tape London nightclub. His co-defendant, Florida rapper Omololu Akinlolu, popularly known as HoodyBaby, also admitted the offence and received a four-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.

The ruling means neither man will serve the imposed prison term immediately, subject to the conditions of their suspended sentences.
The case has attracted attention because of Brown’s international fame and the severity of the allegations surrounding the nightclub incident, which prosecutors described as a vicious and unprovoked attack.

Judge Warns Fame Will Not Protect Chris Brown

During sentencing, Judge Tony Baumgartner made it clear that Brown’s global music career would not entitle him to preferential treatment under the law.

“I take account of your employment and long-established career in music. Your fame, commercial success and professional standing do not entitle you to special treatment. The law applies equally to everyone,” the judge said.

Brown, who has maintained a successful career in the international music industry, faced the possibility of imprisonment following his guilty plea. However, the court ultimately imposed a suspended sentence rather than requiring him to begin serving the eight-month term immediately.

How the Attack on Abraham Diaw Unfolded

According to details presented in court, the incident occurred at Tape London nightclub in February 2023, when Brown attacked music producer Abraham Diaw.

Prosecutors said Brown struck Diaw on the head twice with a tequila bottle, while Akinlolu punched him during the confrontation.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said the assault continued as Diaw attempted to escape through the crowded nightclub.
“They continued their assault whilst the victim attempted to flee through the club. The victim was kicked while he was seated defenseless on the floor,” the prosecution service stated.

Diaw subsequently required hospital treatment for injuries to his head and knees.
The prosecution characterised the incident as a serious act of violence, particularly because a bottle was allegedly used as a weapon and the attack took place in a crowded entertainment venue.

Claire Campbell, a senior prosecutor at CPS London South, said the incident involved a vicious and unprovoked attack.

“This was a vicious and unprovoked attack by Brown and Akinlolu in a crowded nightclub where Brown used a glass bottle as a weapon to strike the victim’s head twice,” Campbell said.

Brown Arrested Two Years After the Incident

Following the nightclub incident, arrest warrants were issued for Brown and Akinlolu. However, both men had left the United Kingdom by the time the warrants were issued.

Brown was eventually arrested in May 2025 when he returned to Britain for his world tour, which included a performance in Manchester.

His arrest brought renewed attention to the investigation and the legal proceedings surrounding the 2023 incident.

In July 2026, Brown pleaded guilty to affray in connection with the attack. Akinlolu also admitted the offence.

Both men had initially faced additional allegations relating to assault and grievous bodily harm, while Brown was also accused of possessing an offensive weapon.

Those additional charges were subsequently dropped after the guilty pleas to affray, paving the way for sentencing on the admitted offence.

HoodyBaby Also Receives Suspended Sentence

Akinlolu, who is known professionally as HoodyBaby and was described by the CPS as Brown’s vocal coach, received a four-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months.

His sentence was shorter than Brown’s eight-month term, although both men avoided immediate imprisonment.

What the Suspended Sentence Means for Chris Brown

Although Brown has escaped immediate imprisonment, the sentence does not mean he was cleared of wrongdoing. He pleaded guilty to affray and received a custodial sentence that has been suspended for 12 months.
