La Government Hospital In Limbo

The reconstruction of the La General Hospital in Accra remains stalled, leaving residents in distress as they struggle to access nearby healthcare services.

What was once a beacon of health service delivery in La is now a skeletal structure, trapped in the throes of funding uncertainties and slow construction.

The La General Hospital, originally a fully operational medical facility, was demolished in 2020 to pave the way for a more modern, well-equipped structure.

It was also observed that the facility had developed cracks, putting Iives of staff as well as patients in danger.

The initiative, according to government projections at the time, was to ensure residents received improved healthcare services through an upgraded hospital.

However, five years later, the site remains under construction with very little to show for the years of promises and planning.

Construction formally began in 2022, but progress has been sporadic.

A visit to the site on April 16, 2025, revealed minimal advancement since the last inspection two months earlier.

While there has been some development on the ground floor and the out-patient department (OPD), the pace remains sluggish.

The staff accommodation block is reportedly near completion, but work on the first floor of the hospital is advancing at a snail’s pace.

No project officials were present during the visit to provide updates, but residents allege that the delay is due to financial constraints.

According to local sources, the contractor is yet to be paid, even after submitting an interim payment certificate to the appropriate authorities.

The residents’ frustration is exacerbated by the government’s repeated promises to expedite the hospital’s completion—promises that have yet to materialize.

For a community that once relied heavily on the La General Hospital, the prolonged delay is not just an infrastructural lapse—it is a matter of public health and survival.

Until concrete action is taken and transparent communication established, the La General Hospital remains not just a construction site, but a symbol of unfulfilled promises.
