Upper West Nurses Cry Foul Over Alleged Land Grab By Estate Developer

A group of aggrieved nurses in the Upper West Region is demanding urgent government intervention over what they describe as a forceful seizure of land allocated to them by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).

The nurses claim that a private estate developer, K. Zorre Properties, has taken over the parcel of land and begun construction, despite the nurses holding proper allocation documents issued by their union.

According to the affected nurses, the land was allocated to them by GRNMA’s regional branch, following a payment of GH₵4,500 each—made in good faith through the union’s official channels.

However, they say their hopes of securing permanent housing have been dashed by what they see as a clear act of encroachment.

One of the affected nurses, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the situation as “heartbreaking,” explaining that many of them took loans and made significant financial sacrifices in anticipation of owning a home.

“We were told the land was genuinely acquired by GRNMA for its members.

Now, to see someone else building on it without our knowledge is very painful. We need the government to step in,” the nurse lamented.

Meanwhile, GRNMA has confirmed it allocated the land in question to its members and expressed concern over the development.

The Upper West Regional Chairman of GRNMA, Benjamin Yanyezie, said the association is taking steps to engage the relevant authorities to resolve the matter.

“We followed due process in acquiring the land. If there is a dispute, then it is only fair that it be handled legally. We are committed to protecting the interests of our members,” Mr. Yanyezie said.

K. Zorre Properties has yet to publicly comment on the allegations.

However, sources close to the company claim the land was legally acquired from traditional authorities, raising questions about possible overlapping claims or documentation errors.
