In a bold and targeted pre-dawn operation, the Asuom District Police Command has arrested three individuals suspected of peddling narcotic substances in the Okyinso area.
The raid, which took place at approximately 3a.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2025, was led by District Police Commander, DSP Richard Kudesey, who was accompanied by a 13-member police team.
The operation forms part of an intensified crackdown on illegal drug trade in the Kwaebibirem Municipality following months of intelligence gathering and community complaints about rising narcotics activity in the Okyinso area.
According to police sources, the suspects — Rose Asantewaa, 54; Kwame Gyamfi, 55; and Kwesi Oware, 30, a physically challenged man — were arrested at separate locations during the raid.
Various quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp were retrieved from them.
During subsequent interrogations conducted at their respective homes, the suspects allegedly admitted ownership of some of the substances.
They also reportedly revealed to police that an unnamed individual supplies them with the drugs for retail distribution.
The identities of the alleged suppliers remain under investigation.
The suspects are currently in police custody, and the seized substances have been secured as evidence.
The Police indicated that formal charges are being prepared, and the trio is expected to be arraigned before court in the coming days.
This development comes amid renewed efforts by the Ghana Police Service to stem the tide of drug-related offences in rural communities, often used as distribution points by larger syndicates.
However, DSP Kudesey reiterated the police’s commitment to rooting out drug networks and has appealed to the public to assist law enforcement by providing timely and actionable information.
