In a bold move to position Ghana at the forefront of global heritage and entertainment tourism, the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has officially opened the call for event proposals for the highly anticipated 2025 edition of December in GH.
The month-long cultural showcase, which has grown into one of the country’s most impactful tourism campaigns, is scheduled to run from December 1, 2025, to January 3, 2026.
This call, which was announced on Monday, May 19, 2025, is being coordinated by the GTA’s International Affairs Secretariat.
It seeks to attract proposals from event organisers, promoters, and cultural curators to deliver innovative, large-scale activities that reflect Ghana’s rich heritage, artistic excellence, and contemporary entertainment.
Movement Rooted in Cultural Reconnection
Now in its sixth year, December in GH has evolved beyond a holiday itinerary into what stakeholders are calling a cultural movement.
First launched under the “Year of Return” campaign in 2019, by the then Akufo-Addo administration, the initiative was originally intended to mark 400 years since the first enslaved Africans arrived in North America.
Its success quickly laid the groundwork for its successor, the “Beyond the Return” initiative, which has since established Ghana as a prime destination for diaspora homecomings, cultural reconnection, and investment.
Each December, the campaign attracts tens of thousands of international visitors—particularly from the African diaspora—who travel to Ghana to experience an immersive lineup of music festivals, fashion shows, art exhibitions, culinary tours, and nightlife events across Accra, Cape Coast, Kumasi, and other regions.
GTA Promises Bigger, Better Season in 2025
Speaking at the official launch, GTA CEO Maame Efua Houadjeto emphasized the transformative role of December in GH in Ghana’s tourism sector.
“December in GH is more than a festive celebration. It is a movement that showcases Ghana’s vibrant spirit to the world,” she said. “As we embrace the Black Star Experience, we are setting the stage for our biggest December season yet.”
The Authority is looking for proposals that not only entertain but also deepen engagement with Ghana’s cultural identity.
This includes events themed around African spirituality, storytelling, creative economy development, local food experiences, and traditional celebrations.
Event organisers are encouraged to submit their proposals via the official GTA submission portal no later than Monday, June 16, 2025.
Proposals must outline the event’s concept, target audience, venue, partnership model, and expected impact.

Annabelle McKenzie, Director of the International Affairs Secretariat, noted that this year’s planning process is already attracting global attention. “We’re excited to work with event organisers who bring fresh ideas and energy.
It’s a time when the global diaspora comes home to experience Ghana—its culture, warmth, food and spirit,” she said.
She added that the 2025 edition would build on past successes and leverage partnerships with creatives, tourism operators, and international stakeholders to expand Ghana’s cultural footprint.
Tourism as Economic Driver
The December in GH campaign is also part of the broader national tourism strategy to diversify Ghana’s economy.
According to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, the 2023 edition generated over $150 million in direct tourism revenue, making it one of the most lucrative periods in Ghana’s hospitality calendar.
