Bawumia Raises Alarm Over Wontumi’s Arrest

By Daniel Bampoe

Former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has broken his silence on the controversial arrest and continued detention of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

In a strongly worded statement released on Tuesday, Dr. Bawumia expressed grave concern over what he described as a lack of transparency surrounding the case, calling for immediate clarity on the charges and the whereabouts of the embattled party executive.

According to Dr. Bawumia, the circumstances of Wontumi’s arrest raise fundamental questions about adherence to the rule of law in Ghana.

“In a democratic environment like ours, no individual is above the law. Equally, no Ghanaian—regardless of political affiliation or status—should ever be denied their constitutional rights,” the former Vice President asserted.

He warned that justice and due process are not optional ideals but essential pillars of Ghana’s democracy.

The former Vice President revealed that he has been in direct contact with Wontumi’s legal team since news of the arrest broke, emphasizing that efforts are underway to ensure the regional chairman’s constitutional rights are protected.

He commended the legal team for what he described as their “professionalism and vigilance” in navigating what appears to be a murky legal situation.

Dr. Bawumia further called on the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and other relevant state agencies to conduct their duties within the strict confines of the law.

He cautioned against arbitrary power, stating that any deviation from constitutional principles threatens to erode public confidence in Ghana’s justice system.
